A Method for setting
the timing on a Model T Ford
by Vern Campbell
- Remove
#1 spark plug and turn the engine to exactly top dead center (TDC) on
cylinder #1 on the compression (firing) stroke. The top of the piston can easily be seen
by looking through the plug hole with the help of a flashlight.
- Remove
the advance rod from the timer.
- Retard
the spark by rotating the timer counter-clockwise about ¼ to ½ inch.
- Turn
the ignition key to the battery position.
If the car is not equipped with a battery, simply connect one to
the battery post on the coil box, and ground.
- Advance
the timer by rotating it clock-wise just until #1 coil buzzes. Leave it right there! Turn the key off.
- Make
sure the spark lever is in the retarded (up) position.
- Bend
the advance rod to fit where the timer is.
If you cannot get it exact, or if you prefer, make sure it fires
past TDC, not before.
- With
the advance rod installed, and before replacing #1 spark plug, check to make sure it is firing at TDC – not before!
This will set the timing so the engine fires
exactly at TDC in the retarded position, and it will not kick. It also gives the full advance range when the
spark lever is pulled down. In the
advanced position it will fire when the piston is about ¾ inch before TDC.
When running down the road, should the spark be
fully advanced? No. That can be very hard on rod bearings. Find the spot where the engine is smoothest
and quietest. On along climb, as the
engine and car slows down, work the spark lever up, not down. Continually find that smooth spot. Yes, it is all done automatically in your
modern car.
