It is only to help dampen movement of the front wheels of the Model T Ford.

Some, but certainly not all, possible causes of shimmy of the front wheels of the Model T Ford: 

(See the Repair Manual for Specs and repair procedures.)

·        Loose or worn Kingpins or Spindle Bushings

·        Loose or worn ball caps on Pitman rod     

·        Loose or worn Tie rod bushings

·        Loose Steering Arm Nut

·        Worn Key or keyway in steering arm or steering shaft

·        Loose or improperly installed Steering Lower Support

·        Loose or worn bushings in Lower Support

·        Worn bushings in Steering gear

·        Worn pinion gears or shafts in Steering Gear

·        Worn key or keyway in Steering Wheel or shaft.

·        Loose Bolts connecting Steering Column to Firewall

·        Loose Steering Column Support

·        Cracked Steering Column

·        Loose or worn rivets connecting steering column to quadrant & gear-case.

·        Incorrect Alignment and adjustment of front wheels, that is: Caster, Camber and Toe-In (gather)
