Oak Coil Box Wood

This coil box back plate and bottom wood is made of Solid Oak and will give years of service. Some of the coil box replacement wood parts on the market today are made from plywood.  The adhesive can actually break down and allow the high voltage from the coils a path to ground.

The photo below is a perfect example where the plywood, adhesive and moisture, no doubt combined with the high voltage energy and made a conductive path to ground.

On an International tour, one plug wouldn’t fire on my 1915 Tow Truck, and after much troubleshooting, we found this problem.  For an emergency repair, we bored the hole a bit larger and wrapped the stud with electrical tape to get some extra insulation.

The real solution was provided by Steve Tanck of Janesville, WI with a solid oak version of this very important part.
